The subject of our file is Capcom’s workmanship and one of the most important examples of the Survival Horror genre. Resident Evil Series. Of course, Resident Evil tarihi not an easy matter. Considering the dozens of games, movies and other content, I am sure it will be a very challenging content. Even so Resident Evil VillageWith a short time left to the market release of the game world, the most crowded and the most successful series of success, take a look together at the history of the series. let’s take it we said.
Resident Evil history and unknown aspects
Resident Evil (1996) (PC, PS, SEGA SATURN)
While telling the history of Resident Evil, it is necessary to know that the production that started the series, Resident Evil, was released in 1996 for PS, Windows, Sega Saturn. Speaking of the plot of the game, Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, members of an elite contingent known as STARS, are trapped in a mansion near Raccon City, where they went to search for them after the disappearance of other team members. In order to escape from the mansion, they must overcome the zombies, creatures and puzzles. The game allowed us to choose control of either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine. It is known that the first Resident Evil was planned in the FPS genre. But due to technical deficiencies, the first game was inspired by Alone in the Dark and had variable camera angles.
Resident Evil 2 (1998) (PC, PS, N64, DREAMCAST, GAMECUBE)
Resident Evil 2 was released in 1998 for PS, Windows, Nintendo 64, DREAMCAST and GAMECUBE. The game was set two months after the events in Resident Evil 1. In the game we met Raccon City for the first time, we were controlling Leon S. Kennedy from the Raccon City Police department and Claire Redfield, brother of Chris Redfield in the first game, who had to flee because their citizens were turned into zombies with a biological weapon.
As an important note, Resident Evil 2; It also became the best-selling Resident Evil game for a platform, selling 5.77 million copies on PlayStation.
Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (1999) (PC, PS, DREAMCAST, GAMECUBE)
When the calendars showed the year 1999, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis game took its place on PS, Windows, DREAMCAST and GAMECUBE platforms. It is the game that gives the name of Resident Evil 3 and we welcome Nemesis, one of the icons of the series. In the game where we controlled STARS member Jill Valentine in the first game, the biological virus epidemic made by the Umbrella Company started with the spread of the city all over the city. Nemesis, a Bio-organic weapon, was created by the Umbrella company to destroy eyewitnesses of its biological experiments, namely STARS members.
Capcom originally thought of Resident Evil 3 as a sequel to Resident Evil 2. Nemesis would be a separate spin off. According to the agreement between Sony and Capcom, a Resident Evil game with the phrase “3” should have been released. That’s why the game was named Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.
Resident Evil Code Veronica (2000) (PS2, DREAMCAST, GAMECUBE)
Originally designed and expected to be the original Resident Evil 3, the sequel to Resident Evil 2, the game evolved into a spin off called Resident Evil Code Veronica and was released on PS2, DREAMCAST and GAMECUBE platforms in 2000. Two siblings, namely; The game, in which we can control Claire Redfield and Chris Redfield, had the classic Resident Evil gameplay and received very positive comments from the fans of the series.
Resident Evil 4 (2005) (PC, PS2, PS3, XBOX360, Wii, WiiU, GAMECUBE, Mobil)
Resident Evil 4, the game that continues in the main series, took its place on Windows, PS2, PS3, XBOX 360, Wii, GAMECUBE platforms in 2005. In the lead role, we were controlling Leon S Kennedy, whom we know from the second game. The game began when Leon, who survived the Raccoon City apocalypse, was brought to the government agent and sent to a village in Spain to save Ashley Graham, the kidnapped daughter of the US president. He abandoned the classic Resident Evil gameplay and switched to an over-the-shoulder camera. This change divided the fans of the series into two.
There were critics of the abandonment of classic Resident Evil gameplay and changing dynamic cameras, as well as those who liked the over-the-shoulder camera and the new gameplay. Resident Evil 4’s script, cinematic atmosphere and gameplay won the game of many years.
Resident Evil 5 (2009) (PC,PS3, PS4, XBOX360, XBOX ONE)
The 5th game of the series took its place on Windows, PS3, XBOX 360 platforms in 2009. Kenichi Ueda and Yasuhiro Anpo took the director’s chair as Shinji Mikami left CAPCOM prior to this play. The subject of the game is Chris Redfield; The BSAA (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance), which was established after the STARS was closed, was past and sent to Africa for its new mission. Chris’s first comment when he met his partner named Sheva Alomar on the job; is that he thinks the events here are one of the T-Virus events. His aim is to find the man who sells biological weapons with the black market named Ricardo Irving. But Chris realizes that the events in town are linked to Leon S. Kennedy’s Ganado report in Resident Evil 4, not the T-Virus.
Resident Evil 5 changed the tense atmosphere of the series and focused on the action. For this reason, although Resident Evil is one of the games excluded by its fans, it has been a game that satisfies the players who love the “action” genre. The game that preserves the acclaimed and accepted over-the-shoulder camera angle and gameplay mechanics in Resident Evil 4 is also a Resident Evil game with Co-op mechanics.
Resident Evil Revelations (2012) (3DS, PC, PS3, XBOX360, WiiU)
The Resident Evil Revelations story, which was first released for 3DS in 2012, takes place between the games in the 4th and 5th Games. The game is also able to switch between first person and third person cameras. Resident Evil Revolations is considered the best spin off of the series.
Resident Evil 6 (2012) (PC,PS3,PS4,XBOX360,XBOXONE)
Resident Evil 6, which was released for Windows, PS3, PS4, XBOX 360, XBOX ONE in 2012, was unfortunately a game that was criticized heavily and hit the ground from the ground. The game, which offers us 4 different stories that intersect from time to time, also offered the opportunity to choose the control of 2 different characters in each story. While the stories of Chris, Jake, and Ada Wong were completely action-packed, only Leon’s story was in the classic Resident Evil flavor. But even this situation was not enough to save the game from criticism. Adopting the over-the-shoulder camera system like games 4 and 5, Resident Evil 6 is still considered by players to be the worst game in the main series.
Resident Evil 7 Biohazard (2017) (PC, PS4, XBOX ONE, SWITCH)
Thinking that Resident Evil 6 was also a failed attempt, CAPCOM decided to make a change in the new game. We mentioned that the first Resident Evil game was intended to be made as FPS. This idea was returned to the making of the new game. Combining the pavilion theme of the first game with FPS, Resident Evil 7 was released in 2017 for Wndows, PS4, XBOX One and nintendo switch.
In the game, we control Ethan Winters, who receives a message from his wife, who has been missing for 3 years, and is on her way to an abandoned house in Louisiana to search for her. Finding her husband Mia trapped in the basement, Ethan is attacked by an unknown force as they try to escape. Finding the only way to stop his wife is to kill her, Ethan witnesses Mia’s resurrection and is captured by Jack Baker while on the run. Now Ethan’s goal is to escape his captivity and realize what happened to his wife and escape with him.
Resident Evil 7, which we can define as a complete horror game, has drawn a very successful graphic for the series. Especially, its gameplay, where survival elements increased, we had to hide and develop strategy, received plenty of praise from Resident Evil fans.
Resident Evil 2 Remake (2019) (PC, PS4, XBOX ONE)
Resident Evil 2 Remake, released for Windows, PS4 and XBOX One in 2019, is the remake of Resident Evil 2, released in 1998. Again, the atmosphere, gameplay, puzzles, tension and horror elements in the game, where we can control Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, have become worthy of Resident Evil’s glory. The game, which received very positive comments from the entire game world, succeeded in writing its name in gold letters in the history of the series.
Resident Evil 3 Remake (2020) (PC, PS4, XBOX ONE)
Resident Evil 3 Remake was released for PC, PS4 and XBOX ONE in 2020, 1 year after the remake of Game 2. According to the first Resident Evil 3 game, we were controlling Jill Valentine again in the game with reduced puzzle dose and increased action load. Resident Evil 3 Remake, which has the title of the last game of the series so far, received positive reviews such as Resident Evil 2 Remake in general.
Resident Evil Village (7 Mayıs 2021) (PC, PS4, PS5, XBOXONE, XBOX Series X / S)
The new game of the series, Resident Evil Village, will again be in the FPS genre. After the events of the 7th game, Ethan Winters and his wife Mia continue their lives peacefully, leaving everything behind, while Chris Redfield will suddenly appear and drag Ethan into a mysterious village and a new nightmare in Europe. It will take place on Windows, PS4, PS5, XBOX ONE, XBOX Series X and Series S platforms on May 7, 2021.
The unknowns of the Resident Evil series
Other releases from RE
One thing we need to mention is the ideas of CAPCOM that planned as Resident Evil series and then turned to other projects. After Resident Evil 1, a Resident Evil game project with Ninja concept was developed. The game, which was planned to use Ninja equipment such as katana, sai, was abandoned to be included in the Resident Evil universe, and CAPCOM presented this idea to us as another legendary game, Onimusha.
Another Resident Evil project, the first planned game idea for Resident Evil 4 was to be a fast action game. There were even those who thought that the game should evolve into the Hack & Slash style, according to one claim. It was Shinji Mikami who intervened in this idea. While Mikami turned the project into the Resident Evil 4 we know now, the aforementioned fast action game turned into Devil May Cry, one of the legends of CAPCOM.
While talking about the Resident Evil history, let me talk about the project known by the players and called Resident Evil 3.5. This project was actually one of the first drafts designed for Resident Evil 4 after abandoning the case of evolving into action. And this version of this project did not have an over-the-shoulder camera like in Resident Evil 4 as we know, but had dynamic camera angles that varied like in Games 1, 2 and 3.
